Following the a former caravan route of trade between Tibet and Nepal, we will arrive the Himalayan sangria-la, the Lo-mangthang, the capital city of the former Kingdom of Mustang, which provide a unique opportunity to experience the authentic Tibetan culture, cuisine, religion and history. Buddhism is deeply engrained in the lives of natives’ people. This trip is particularly suitable for those people who wants to explore the ancient Tibetan culture. It is untouched region, occupied by Tibetan villages, monasteries, traditional people, Mani walls, Chhoterns, caves and many more. The monasteries are unique because of old wall paintings and distinctive architectural structure. The Nepalese government has opened these territories for foreigners since October 1991 after a long period of isolation from second world, but still the area need a special permit for foreigner issued from immigration office Nepal. The beautiful landscape of this rain shadow zone of the Himalayas can be compared. Mustang trekking is a challenging trek. It is important that you are healthy and have the necessary condition to handle the daily 4 to 8 hour walks. Our three-week journey requires team spirit as well as tolerance towards other travelers and also flexibility. Another attraction in the Mustang region is the Tiji Festival influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, which is timed to coincide with the end of the dry season (late winter/spring).

  • Day 01Arrival in KathmanduHeartily welcome to the Kathmandu, the capital city of Himalayan Kingdom and the city of Pagodas. Divine Excursion will happily welcome you at Tribhuvan International Airport. Our airport representative or tour operator guides you to the hotel. You can enjoy your free time. In the evening, we have a meeting with our tour operator or tour guide for the required information about day to day program. Overnight at hotel in Kathmandu.
  • Day 02Kathmandu city tourToday, after breakfast we will visit the medieval city Patan. It is the novel city of religious tolerance with both Hinduism and Buddhism consequently exist with the in the brotherhood. All the pilgrimages of both religions exist one-another in the same place and every person have respect and proud of it. Durbar Square is the main highlight of this city and it is religious and secular center for different Hindu and Buddhist monuments. This city is an “open air museum" where you can experience the daily life of the Newari people, especially the handicraft workers. We will take a lunch at the restaurant with a beautiful garden in the inner courtyard of Patan Museum. In the evening, we will visit the Boudhanath Stupa, situated in the north-west of Kathmandu. The foundation date of this Stupa goes back to the 5th century AD with a height of 36 meters. This part of the Kathmandu recently developed as a center for Tibetan Buddhism with lots of newly constructed monasteries, mediation centers, Buddhist schools, Buddhist painting schools, university and Buddhist colleges.   • Day 03Drive to PokharaAfter breakfast, we will take the bus to Pokhara (Flight also Possible on request). The drive is very pleasant along the beautiful countryside of Nepal. The road mostly leads us to nearby the different rivers that might give us some sights of rafters enjoying in the whitewater of Himalayan Rivers. During the drive, we may grateful with the scenery of several beautiful mountains, terraced fields of rice, isolated traditional villages and some newly established towns. Also sometime Himalayan range may welcome us in some places. It's an incredible drive though the road condition is not so good everywhere. In between we will take a lunch break. Finally, after reaching Pokhara, we can enjoy our free time and prepare for next day trekking. Overnight at a Hotel in Pokhara.
  • Day 04Flight to Jomsom and 3-4 hours walk to KagbeniEarly in the morning we will fly to Jomsom, the small Himalaya town lies at the altitude of 2713 m, also, presence headquarter of Mustang district. After meeting our trekking team, we will start our trekking tour towards Lo-Mangthang, the former kingdom of mysterious Buddhist state. Today, we will make the distance of 3-4 hours, mostly along the bank of Kali Gandaki River to Kagbeni, a beautiful cultural settlement of lower Mustang, lies on the bank of holy river Kali Gandaki, between the green field. Also, the Kagbeni is known as the gateway to the Kingdom of Upper Mustang. We will overnight in a lodge in this beautiful village, which offer us beautiful scenery of terrains of Kali Gandaki valley, till to horizon with the beautiful sand mountains, cave of the ancestors. The town itself is fascinating with unique ancient architecture, houses are built so close together, sometime through tunnels that offer little space not more than one person. It has a one ancient monastery, build in 1429.
  • Day 05Kagbeni (2810m) –Chhusang (2980m) –Chele (3050m) - (6-7 hrs)After breakfast we will leave the village Kagbeni, but before leaving this beautiful place we have to register the special permit of upper mustang. The path is almost followed the near terrains of the bank of Kali Gandaki rivers, sometimes gentle uphill and sometime downhill and sometime leveled terrains. We will walk through village Tangbe (3050m), another unique village of Mustang, with beautiful big chhorten, lots of other small chhorten and the ruins of a castle. From Tangbe, we will get the beautiful scenery of the village Chhusang, is the place to make lunch break. After break, we will continue our journey to the village Chele, which provides a beautiful view of the previous route. It takes almost 7 hours to reach there. Uphill 350m/ downhill 100m
  • Day 06Chele-Ghiling (3570m) - (6-7hrs)Our today’s destination is village Ghiling. From Chele we have to follow the craggy uphill terrains, through the treeless landscape, but another side of the river Ghyakar Khola we can get scenery of beautiful green village, Ghyakar. After about 3 hours we will reach the village Samar, another green village and backward, we will get a beautiful view of the mountains Annapurna and Nilgiri. After crossing the Bhena La, the pass of an altitude of 3830 m, we will make the lunch break. Afterwards, we will continue our trek following the treeless terrains, the uphill and downhill path always follows us to Giling (3510 m). After a short tea break in our lodge, we will explore the beautiful monastery complex. Ghiling is the village of southernmost largest village in Upper Mustang. Uphill 920m/ downhill 200m
  • Day 07Ghiling-Tsarang (3870m) - (7-8 hrs.Walking)From Ghiling, initially we will follow the gentle uphill along the valley of rocky terrains, then after another 20 minutes uphill, the trail flattened till to Nyi La (4000m), from there we can enjoy the magnificent view entire upper Mustang, the colorful geological rock formations, villages, Mani walls etc. then the descent leads us to Ghemi (3520 m), another beautiful village with various Chhoterns, traditional monastery. After lunch break, after crossing the river, we can touch the 240 m long Mani wall, which is longest in Mustang. Now, the trail leads us uphill to the Tsarang La Pass (3870 m), from there we can observe entire Tsarang (3550 m), which is our today’s destination. After arriving in our lodge, we will visit the monastery complex, which has a very large collection of paintings (Thankas, Mandals) and statues. Uphill 900m/ downhill 920m
  • Day 08Tsarng- Lo Manthang (3800m) -7-8hrs We leave the Tsarang after breakfast and walk to Lo Gekar. There we visit the existing oldest sacred monument of Mustangs, the historic Ghar Gompa, dated back to 8th century build by Padmasambhava (also known as Guru Rinpoche) himself, who was then on his way to Tibet. The Ghar Gompa is located at an altitude of 3,940m and older than the famous Samye Monastery, the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet, whose also build by Guru Padmasambhava. Then, we will walk mostly uphill to Marang La (4230 m). After crossing it the trail flattened somehow 2 hours, then descents till to Lo Manthang, the capital Mustangs (3800 m). We will overnight there for 3 nights at a lodge with full board. Uphill 690m/ downhill 400m
  • Day 09Lo-Manthang, the day is reserved for to explore Lo-mangthangThe capital of the former kingdom Mustang is full of mystery, was founded in around 1441. It is occupied by huge meadows, a small town, mountain panoramas, traditional settlement and protected by a city wall. The town has narrow streets and rows of houses. Today, mostly we will visit the monastery Jamba Gompa (Temple of the Mandalas), with a pleasing huge statue of Buddha, completed in 1448. After this monastery, we will visit the Temple of Mahamuni (Thubchen Lhakhang) is dedicated to the historical Buddha and was founded in 1468. The temple itself is decorated with religious sculptures. We also visit the Shakya Chyodi Gompa, the "new monastery". It was built by merging two monuments: Choprang Gompa and Dhakar-Thungling Chhoede Gompa. The newer building has classrooms, kitchen, dining room, library and pharmacy. In the center of the complex there are two assembly halls of the older temples with beautiful sculptures. Also, we will explore the Royal Palace and which is fascinating, traditional mud houses, which is hardly changed since the Middle Ages.
  • Day 10Lo-Manthang -A day trip towards the Chhosar ValleyWe will make today, a day excursion to explore the Chhoser valley, including Jhong cave and other beautiful monasteries, ruins of different palaces, etc. It takes 1.5 to 2 hours walking in this beautiful valley, which situated near to the Tibetan border. Jhong is the multi-stored cave system of Chhoser Valley. In the evening we will return back to the beautiful city Lo-Mangthang to spend the last night. 4-5hrs to go. Overnight in the same lodge from yesterday.
  • Day 11Lo-Mangthang – Yara (3650m)Today we leave the Lo-mangthang, the capital town of former kingdom Mustangs in the direction of Jomsom, following the eastern route. This also very scenic trail, after about forty minutes of walking, from the top of the pass, we can take a last look at Lo-Manthang, and say goodbye once more inwardly. We walk for about 4-5hrs to the Dhi Gaon, where the Puyung Khola, a tributary of Kali Gandaki flows. After making a walk along the bank of this river, we may collect some fossils of the Ammonite. After a while, a steady uphill trail between the cliffs wait for us, at the end of this rigid, Yara welcomes us. After a break, we may make short excursions towards Luri Gomba (4060 meters), a monastery in the middle of the cliff. Uphill 460m/ downhill 650m
  • Day 12Yara-Tangge(3,240 m)After breakfast, we will measure the distance towards Tangge, which is 6-7 hrs of walking distance. From Yara the path leads steeply up to a high plateau. On the right hand side is the deep-gorge of Kali Gandaki valley, also in front of us the beautiful scenery of Dhaulagiri of height 8,167 m. from the end of this huge plateau, the path starts to downhill to the Dhechyang Khola River. After crossing the river, on the opposite side, it goes again steeply uphill to a 4060 m high nameless pass. Continue on a similar ridge of the Sertang-Danda, the flattening is now steep descent to the small village of Tangge (3,240 m). Overnight in a Lodge with full board. Uphill 790 m / downhill 920 m
  • Day 13Tange-Chhusang (2980m): (9-10hrs walking)Today is our longest day of our entire tour, so we have to start our journey very early in the morning with the first ray of sunshine to our next destination Chhusang (3,040 m) but the beautiful scenery of Nilgiri, Dhaulagari with the heavenly peace and still life enforce us to forget all the tiredness and provide us lifetime experience. Initially, we have to, cross the Tange Khola, a River, then climb up to the Narsing La (4110m), then trail lead us downhill for a moment, then it flattened and then comfortable uphill brings us to Paha (4,218 m), where we will make a short break. Further, we will continue our journey, in constant ups and downs, then follow the ridge of Siyarko Tangk Danda and descend steeply through rocks and boulders till to the Narsing Khola Valley. On the left side near the bank of the river, we will see the small beautiful village of Tetang. Finally, we will achieve our destination at Chuusang. Overnight in Lodge with full board. Walking time approx. 9-10 h / ascent 930 m / descent 1,470 m.
  • Day 14Chhusang-Muktinath (3710m): (about 5-6hrs)Today, the last difficult part of our trekking waited for us. Till the village Tetang, the trail goes comfortable, steady flattened between the buckwheat field. After crossing it, the trail begins to assent along the meadow, rocky mountains with the beautiful scenery of Rocky Mountains into the left and high Himalaya on the right and after about 4 hours we will able to cross a pass, the Gyu La at about 4,077 m altitude. Now, scenery of Annapurna is back to us. In front of us, the Peaks of 6,000 to 8,000 m appear. After a break, the trail descends to the famous pilgrimage Muktinath, which is a religious and cultural center for Hindus, Bons and Buddhists. Overnight in a Lodge with full board. Walking time is approx. 5-6 h / ascent 980 m / descent 450 m.
  • Day 15Muktinath: the rest dayWe don’t have very busy schedule today, so enough time to make comfortable breakfast. After breakfast, we will visit the holy temple the Muktinath. Here, we can make holy bath in 108 natural holy waters springs also the rituals from descendants of different religions, from Hindu, Buddhist and Bon. It is memorable to spend the leisure time with the yogis and sadhus from temple complex. The surroundings of the temple complex also exciting, because of the co-existence of the different monuments of two different religions of Hindu and Buddhist. The rest of the day can be spent at leisure or can possible to explore the surroundings of Muktinath. Overnight in the same lodge of yesterday.
  • Day 16Muktinath-Jomsom (2720m); 5-6 hrs After breakfast, we will begin our last day this long trekking, initially our trail follows the downhill descents, crosses the ancient historical village Jharkot (3550 m), where lies the Sakya Gompa, a monastery from the 15th Century. Further, our trail again leads us downhill to Kali Gandaki River and on the right side we will get the beautiful scenery of Kagbeni village between the fields of buckwheat and apple plantation. After Eklebhati, our trail remains comfortable straight on the bank of this holy river till Jomsom, overnight here in a lodge with full board. We have to walk today around 4-5 hours today. Down hill 990m.
  • Day 17Fly back to Pokara from Jomsom Early in the morning we will fly to Pokhara with small aircraft along a Kaligandkai gorge with the beautiful scenery of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu massive and other hundreds of mountain peaks of the western Himalayan region. After check-in at our hotel, we may take a rest or explore the Pokhara city exists nearby Fewa Lake. Here, we can indulge in buying some souvenirs or sampling some local delicacies. Overnight in Pokhara.
  • Day 18Ayurveda day in PokharaToday we will enjoy a three-hour Ayurvedic relaxation program at the Ayurveda Center in Pokhara, after long trek it helps to recover the energy. The rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight at a hotel in Pokhara.
  • Day 19Flay back to Kathmandu along HimalayasToday we will take the flight along the Himalayan range towards Kathmandu. Once again we have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Himalayan range in the background, but we have to choose the window seat on the left side. Transfer to the hotel and the rest of the day free for individual programs.
  • Day 20Final departureReturn flight to your home town. Our representative escort you to the airport.

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements:

This is a moderate trek and suitable for passionate walkers with the ability to walk at least 6-8 hours a day with a light day pack. But, we do not forget that walking in higher altitudes is more physically demanding than walking in lower altitudes; however, if you are in good condition in health with average physical fitness and have a positive attitude, self-confidence and a strong determination, you can accomplish this trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly for some weeks prior to the trip is a good idea to enhance your strength and stability. Past hiking experience would be an asset, but no technical skill is required for this trip. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases are required to consult their doctor before taking the trip.

Acclimatization and Safety:
High altitude Sickness (HAS) can be life threatening if elevation is gained too rapidly without proper acclimatization. Overexertion and dehydration contribute to HAS. So, drink at least 3-4 litters of water every day besides tea and coffee which act as diuretics. The altitude sickness is often characterized by the following symptoms: Headache, dizziness, difficulty breathing, tiredness and insomnia. Enough time to acclimatize, slowly moving, avoiding smoking and alcohol, positive feeling, lots of drink and sufficient rest can avoid the altitude sickness. For the emergency, bring pain killers that do not make you sleepy. If you are heart patients or those who have hypertension; should consult with your doctor before leaving to travel.

Best Season

From April to November are favorable months to trek to Upper Mustang, because of a rain Shadow zone, monsoon cannot effect the trekking. During these months, the temperature of this reason is acceptable and weather normally remains clear, but preparing for all short of the temperature is obligatory because in such altitude, the weather is undefined. Please bring warm clothes, Thermal underwear, down jacket and down sleeping bag. Also in Mustang, because of altitude, there is a very big difference in temperature during the day and at night. Please also have a linen cloth (inner sleeping bag), sunglasses, and sunscreen with a high sun protection factor is required.
